Introduction

Middle World Farms offers work experience placements for school-age students who want to explore farming, food growing, ecology and community food systems.

Students taking part in a placement experience the daily rhythm of a working regenerative farm and gain hands-on experience in practical tasks such as seed sowing, planting, harvesting and preparing produce for the local community.

The aim of the programme is to help young people understand the relationship between soil, food, nature and community while gaining confidence in a real working environment.

What Students Experience

Work experience students are introduced to the core activities that take place on the farm throughout the week. Depending on the time of year and the needs of the farm, activities may include:

  • Sowing seeds and caring for seedlings
  • Preparing beds for planting
  • Transplanting crops into the field
  • Observing plant growth and biodiversity
  • Harvesting vegetables
  • Washing and preparing produce
  • Packing vegetable boxes for the community
  • Helping organise vegetable collections

Students are encouraged to ask questions and develop an understanding of how a small farm operates as part of a local food system.
